Approximately 20 seconds after I sent through the blog last night, Steven came over during his bear watch, to tell me the northern lights were out. I was cozy and warm, so I snapped a quick photo through the tent door, and snuggled back into my sleeping bag as Steven went to let the others know.
A few minutes later I hear ‘no no, really Mardi, you better come out now!’, so I hastily donned my warm gear and climbed out of the tent. The moon was illuminating the mountains, and the classic green streaks were dancing above them. For half an hour or so, we watched the sky shift and change, the lights disappearing in some directions to then reappear behind us, or above us. An amazing way to end an amazing day!
It was -21 degrees outside when we woke up, but unfortunately the cold didn’t stick around long. We skied out through Oppdalen, into a narrow winding gully, where we passed plenty of reindeer, some staring down at us from atop the rocky sidewalls.
We eventually found ourselves in a big wide valley called Reindalen, and had lunch surrounded by beautiful peaks. The rest of the afternoon was spent heading west down the valley. We set up camp as the light began to fade, all feeling ready for dinner and bed after 7 sessions of hauling today.
Tomorrow will be a big day too, hopefully around 20km!
