#8: stunning day
2023-03-24 06:24:34am
A bit of snowfall overnight but we emerged to a clear blue sky. The ski towards Adventdalen was magical, particularly with the spectacular caldera-esque mountain of Helvetiafjellet in the foreground.
Before hitting the ice road we climbed up to point 222 and descended a beautiful snowy gulley we discovered last year.
Eventually we reached the snowmobile track and followed it for almost 15km to our final camp.
This has been the coldest Svalbard expedition we’ve guided. The temperature rarely rose above -20c and reached -36 on two nights, including our first night out.
Thanks Akshay, Claire, Duncan, Ed and Janice for enduring this tough trip with care and good humour, and to my daughter Mardi, for her exceptional guiding ❤️.
And to Liz…get well soon!
